Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Sometimes minimally invasive spine surgery is called less invasive spine surgery.

Traditionally, spine surgery has been performed as "Open Surgery." This means that a large incision is made in the area to be operated on to allow the surgeon to view and access the anatomy.

However, technical advancements have made it possible to treat more back and neck disorders using a minimally invasive surgical procedure in recent years.

Because minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS), does not involve a long incision, it avoids significant damage to the muscles surrounding the spine.

Typically, this results in less pain after surgery and a faster recovery. The tubular retractor is the most widely utilized technique.

A small incision is made during the surgery, and the tubular retractor is introduced through the skin and soft tissues all the way down to the spinal column.

The tubular retractor keeps the muscles open and stays in place for the duration of the surgery.

Dr Vamshi Krishna will gain access to the spine by inserting small instruments through the tubular retractor's center.

The retractor is used to remove any bone or disc material that needs to be removed, as well as to install any fusion devices.

The tubular retractor is withdrawn at the end of the process, and the muscles are returned to their normal place. This limits the muscle damage that is more commonly seen in open surgeries.

Common Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeries:

  • MIS Lumbar Discectomy: In this surgery, the patient is positioned face-down and a small incision is made over the location of the herniated disk.

  • Dr Vamshi Krishna will insert the retractor and remove a small amount of the lamina bone.

  • MIS Lumbar Fusion: Here, the patient is positioned face-down and the surgeon places one retractor on either side of the spine.
  • This approach prevents disruption of the midline ligaments and bone. Using the two retractors, Dr Vamshi Krishna will remove the lamina and the disc, place the bone graft into the disc space, and place screws or rods to provide additional support.
