Neurosurgical Clippings

Aneurysm clipping is a tried-and-true procedure for treating a bulge in a weak section of an artery.

The high-pressure blood flow inside arteries puts constant pressure on the artery walls.

Constant pressure can cause a weak spot in the wall to bulge out, resulting in an aneurysm. An aneurysm's primary danger is that the ballooned area will eventually burst, pouring blood into the brain.

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs as a result of this, which is a medical emergency that can result in disability or death.

Clipping is a technique for treating an aneurysm that involves inserting a small metal clip over the aneurysm's neck—the base of the bulge.

As a result, the aneurysm is cut off from the blood supply and cannot burst or spill blood into the body.

Surgical clipping is used to isolate an aneurysm from the rest of the body's circulation without obstructing any neighboring minor perforating arteries.

A craniotomy is a procedure that involves making a hole in the skull while under general anesthesia. To find the aneurysm, the brain is softly pulled.

To prevent normal blood flow from entering the aneurysm, a tiny clip is put across the base, or neck. The clip functions similarly to a miniature coil-spring clothespin, with the blades remaining tightly closed until pressure is applied to open them.

The titanium clips are permanently attached to the artery.

Neurosurgical Clipping may be an effective treatment for the following:

  • Ruptured aneurysms burst open and release blood into the space between the brain and skull, called a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).

  • Unruptured aneurysms may not cause symptoms and are typically detected during routine testing for another condition. The treatment decision for observation, surgical clipping or bypass, or endovascular coiling or flow diversion largely depends on the aneurysm’s size, location, and neck geometry.
