Neuropathy Treatment

Neuropathy is a condition in which one or more nerves are damaged or dysfunctional, causing numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, and pain in the affected area.

Neuropathies commonly begin in the hands and feet, but they can also affect other areas of the body.

Neuropathy, often called peripheral neuropathy, indicates a problem within the peripheral nervous system.

When nerve cells, known as neurons, are injured or destroyed, neuropathy develops.

Neuropathy can affect a single nerve (mononeuropathy), a group of nerves in a small location (multifocal neuropathy), or a large number of peripheral nerves across the body (polyneuropathy).

Some common signs and symptoms are:

  • Tingling or numbness, especially in the hands and feet.
  • Sharp, burning, throbbing, stabbing or electric-like pain.
  • Changes in sensation.
  • Falling, loss of coordination.
  • Not being able to feel things in your feet and hands.
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle twitching, cramps and/or spasms.
  • Inability to move a part of the body (paralysis).
  • Problems with bladder, digestion and bowels problem.

Diagnosis of Neuropathy is done by Dr Vamshi Krishna in various ways, he will first see the patient’s medical history and do a physical examination.

He will ask questions related to signs and symptoms. He will also check your reflexes, your coordination and balance, etc. Blood tests and imaging tests will also be done along with MRI, Biopsy.

Treatment begins by identifying the root cause of the problem such as diabetes or infections.

Few of the options include:

  • Medicines can be used to control pain like Antidepressants
  • Physical therapy which is used to increase strength, balance and range of motion.
  • Surgery is available for patients with compression-related neuropathy caused by such things as herniated disc in back or neck, tumors, infections, or nerve entrapment disorders.
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS): This treatment involves placing electrodes on the skin at or near the nerves causing your pain.
