A brain stroke or brain attack is a medical emergency. It happens when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or reduced to a minimum and thus preventing the brain tissue from getting oxygen and other important nutrients.
The cells in the brain begin to die in a few minutes. This can happen when the blood vessel ruptures and bleeds or there is some kind of blockage in the blood supply.
Few treatment options are effective when diagnosed early. So it’s better to look for signs and symptoms.
- Facing trouble or having confusion in speaking and understanding.
- Feeling of sudden numbness, weakness or paralysis in face, arm or leg.
- Struggling with blurred vision in one or both eyes. Having sudden and severe headaches accompanied with vomiting, dizziness, etc.
- Having trouble walking and loss of coordination.
- Strokes fall into three main categories:Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), ischemic stroke, and haemorrhagic stroke. The last two are more common.
Diagnosis begins by determining the type of stroke. You will have a physical exam followed by blood tests. CT scan will also be done to create a detailed image of the brain. In some cases, MRI, ultrasound echocardiogram will be done for more information.
Treatment depends on the type of stroke. Dr Vamshi Krishna will decide after seeing the test reports and results. In case of Ischemic stroke, there are number of procedures like:
Emergency IV medication: Dissolve the blood clot and restore blood flow.
Emergency endovascular procedures: Treatment inside the vessel by catheter or stent retriever to directly remove the blood clot.
In case of Hemorrhagic stroke, the focus is on controlling the bleeding and reducing pressure. Treatment options include:
- Emergency measure: Blood thinners, drugs to lower the pressure, etc.
- Surgery: If the area of bleeding is large, Surgery will be performed to remove the blood or repair blood vessels.
- Surgical clippings: Tiny clamp at base of aneurysm to stop blood flow.
- Coiling: Catheter will be inserted in the artery to place tiny coils to fill aneurysm.
- Other methods include Surgical AVM removal and stereotactic radiosurgery.
